Use that to your asking advantage!
I would recommend using this as an ask but it can be used as an answer if you want to torture your date before they find out if you are actually going to go with them. I used this as an answer but I knew my date VERY well so it was kind of a joke between us.
What you will need to do this:
A book that you KNOW your date has (or a book that your date likes that you are willing to give to them)
A paper and pencil
A computer
An envelope
Start by figuring out what you want your message to say, obviously. Write it down on your paper VERTICALLY with one letter on each line. After that comes the intensive labor of pouring over the book you have chosen searching for four or five things, page, paragraph, line, word, and letter. For example, when I was answering my date, I took the biology book that we both had and, after finding the word I was looking for, the directions were page 37, paragraph 3, line 4, word 10. So my directions looked like 37/3/4/10. If you were being letter specific all you would have to do is used the number corresponding with the letter.
For my answer I found several different combinations so that there was one hit and several misses, therefore making it super hard for my poor unfortunate friend. They just said basic things like "Keep Looking" or "Not This One" etc.
When I was done it looked like this:
lol Not really. Actually it kinda looks like a matrix code.
After I was done I typed them all up and stuck it in an envelope labeled "Look in your Biology Book" and left my date to flounder around trying to find out what the numbers meant. But if you wanted to be nicer, you could always put "page, paragraph, line, word, (letter)" at the top of your numbers. (I would recommend doing so if you are using just letters.)
So there you have it, a rather puzzling number game to perplex your date for at least a few hours. I hope this was helpful to you!
Good Luck!
